The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

We are learning all about caterpillars. Today we heard the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and we watched the story on the whiteboard. We chatted all about it, did a potato print picture of the caterpillar and put the story into sequence. It is a great story!

Colour Mixing

In Art this week we were experimenting with colours and colour mixing. We had two colours - red and yellow. We mixed these colours and discovered lots of different shades and mixes. We then used these colours to paint the sun. We used a different mixture of the colours for each circle around the sun. It was great fun mixing the colours as normally we are not allowed to mix colours as we have a paint brush for each colour. But today we were allowed to mix the colours and it was very interesting. We learned all about Monet. He was an artist who liked to mix colours too. His paintings are beautiful. Ms. Crotty showed us a book full of his paintings.

Valentine's Day

We are currently making plans for Valentine's Day in Room 1. Valentines Day is on 14th February. It's a special day when we say " I Love you" to someone special. We are making special handprints and cards for our families. They will be so surprised. We all had a piece of clay and we rolled it and made it soft in our hands. Then with the help of Ms. Hynes and Ms. Crotty we pushed our hands down onto the clay and we made a handprint. We left them on the floor to dry and they went hard. We painted them today and hopefully they will be dry by Friday and we will bring them home to give to someone special.

Happy Penguins

We have made 3D penguins. They are great at catching fish. We don't think they are Emperor Penguins, but they look happy and friendly no matter what kind they are!

St. Brigid's Day

Today is February 1st. It is the first day of Spring. It is St. Brigid's Day. We heard some stories about St. Brigid today - the story about how she got land to build her church, the story about giving away her milk and butter, the story about how a fire was lit for 700 years when she died and the story of how she wove a cross to help explain all about God to the dying chieftain. Teacher found some of these stories on http://www.holyspiritinteractive.net/kids/saints/0201.asp and http://www.fisheaters.com/customstimeafterepiphany2a.html .
Teacher showed us how to make St. Brigid's crosses with 4 strips of paper, then she and Maggie made St. Brigid's crosses out of rushes. Lastly we coloured a lovely picture of St. Brigid and her cloak, and then we used little pieces of felt to decorate the cloak, and to make it feel like a real cloak.
